September: A Month of Healing and Hope - Suicide Prevention Month

Every year, September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time dedicated to raising awareness about the critical issue of suicide and promoting mental health support and resources. As a mental health resource, the Mahogany Projek would be remiss if we did not observe this dedication. We must be reminded of the importance of reaching out to those who may be struggling, reducing the stigma, and fostering a sense of hope and resilience in all communities.

In order to truly grasp the significance of Suicide Prevention Month, we must first acknowledge the alarming statistics associated with suicide:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 800,000 people worldwide die by suicide each year.

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, claiming over 47,000 lives annually.

Suicide affects people of all ages, races, and backgrounds, everyone can think of someone they lost untimely due to suicide.

Few things we all can do this month and every month to bring down those statistics:

Share Information: Share resources, articles, and posts on social media to help educate others about suicide prevention.

Volunteer: Consider volunteering for a local crisis hotline or a mental health organization. Your time can make a meaningful impact!

Support Loved Ones: Reach out to friends and family who you haven't heard from in awhile, or you know might be struggling. A simple message or check in can go a long way in showing your support.

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out to a mental health professional or a crisis hotline immediately (988). You are not alone, and help is available.
